Title: What is a tropical storm?


Learning outcomes:

  • know what tropical storms are and how they form
  • understand the hazards associated with tropical storms
  • consider their spatial distribution, magnitude, frequency, regularity & predictability
  • Specification content: The nature of tropical storms and their underlying causes. Forms of storm hazard: high winds, storm surges, coastal flooding, river flooding and landslides. Spatial distribution, magnitude, frequency, regularity, predictability of hazard events.

    • To know primary and secondary impacts of tropical storms & understand how these impacts can be classified as environmental, social, economic and political
    • To explore short and long term responses to tropical storms
    • To apply this understanding to the case study of Hurricane Katrina

    Specification content: Impacts: primary/secondary, environmental, social, economic, political. Short and long-term responses: risk management designed to reduce the impacts of the hazard through preparedness, mitigation, prevention and adaptation. Impacts and human responses as evidenced by two recent tropical storms in contrasting areas of the world.
